Is it possible to use symlinks to save disk space?

I tried it using the /csgo/*.vpk files (as those take up a majority of the disk space):

lrwxrwxrwx 1 steam steam 18 Sep 13 06:41 pak01_000.vpk -> paks/pak01_000.vpk lrwxrwxrwx 1 steam steam 18 Sep 13 06:41 pak01_001.vpk -> paks/pak01_001.vpk lrwxrwxrwx 1 steam steam 18 Sep 13 06:41 pak01_002.vpk -> paks/pak01_002.vpk lrwxrwxrwx 1 steam steam 18 Sep 13 06:41 pak01_003.vpk -> paks/pak01_003.vpk

But now my server won't start up anymore - due to thousands of 'Missing map material's. What am I doing wrong?
