Since overlays get stretched arbitrarily by the player's screen resolution, what are good sizes to make a custom screen overlay?

In my case I'm going to make something with a symbol in the bottom right corner, above the ammo.

I remember someone posting their tips on basically what I'm asking, but it was as a reply to some random thread and I just can't seem to find it.
