Hallo, I need advice. Which cpu will give me maximum performance for hlds server? Approximately how much slots with amxx mod can hang these computers? Windows Server 2003 64bit

AMD Athlon64 X2 Dual-Core 6400+ (3200MHz/ L2 Cache 2x1MB)
AMD Phenom X4 9500 (4MB,95W,AM2)

INTEL Core 2 Duo E6600 LGA775 2.4GHz (1066MHz, 4MB)

Thanx in advice

Best thing of those four is the Phenom because of the four cores. If you want an Intel competitor to that, look into the Intel Core 2 Quad, but two cores can't compete with four.

EDIT: Drak, you ARE the fanboy. >_>

Well.. More fan boys then..

Plus, would it really matter? HLDS isn't multithreaded.. So.. Wouldn't it only run on one core?

AMD Athlon64 X2 Dual-Core 6400+ (3200MHz/ L2 Cache 2x1MB)

I have same but replace 6400+ with 3500+ (little bit older), and when I run HLDS it is perfect, absolutely perfect, great performance.

I've always used Intel, and don't plan on spending money to replace my intel mobo with an AMD, and then go and buy a new processor also. If I had $500 to spend, then I'd go with AMD.

Applications that don't support multithread technologies will not support (at least not use) all 2-4 cores.

vvg, I hate correcting you but Intel Core 2 Quad is a 4 core... Hence the Quad in its name, Core 2 is just the description of which core.

Intel for a servers... Intel sits at a lower temperature, and assuming it's going to be on for more than a week at a time, you're going to need a lower temperature...

But by all means if you intend on going out and getting a liquid cooling kit for your server, go and buy an amd processor for a server...

Warning in advance: I am the ultimate AMD fanatic; I am an AMD investor and try to follow AMD business tactics and strategies very closely. My reviews recently are not quite as biased as they used to be because I do understand some things aren't what they seem.

First, Intel processors:
1) Quite remarkable overclocking on two grounds:
- 65nm and with the E8400 that's 45nm which will overclock more presumably
- efficient Core architecture allows overcloking
-- negative about Intel: subpar stock cooling so if you ever overclock, a new HSF (Heat Sink + Fan) would be necessary to overclock well (ie 3.4Ghz).
2) Decent Core architecture allows for expandability
- the "Core" architecture Core 2 Duos and Core 2 Quads was designed fairly well (although it took them many years to design it :-)).
- it is quite efficient - more Core info here

Secondly, AMD processors:
1) Older architecture K8 (6400+ 90nm tech)
- But fortunately you can teach an old dog new tricks
- The K8 may be older but it is very well-priced
- AMD Processors provide some of the best Price/Performance Ratios. See tomshardware for more information.
- Heat dissipation is a bit subpar due to 90nm but stock AMD HSF cooling is quite good.
- The 6400+ provides great performace for a great price.
2) Newer K10 architecture (Phenom 9500/9600 Black Edition)
- More efficient than K8
- approximately 25% better performance than K8 architecture
- Much cooler than K8
- Does have TLB erratum but many processors sustain bugs that are negligible
- Quite overclockable (9600 BE in particular - with unlocked CPU multiplier)
- Excellent price/performance ratio.

Enough with bullet points, I'd suggest AMD processors as they are cheaper and provide very strong performance for a low cost. I'd say do this: Get a Phenom 9600 Black Edition with the MSI K9A2 790X board. Overclock that processor to maybe 2.6-3.0Ghz with some FSB modding as well as CPU multiplier and maybe a little higher voltage. That should provide some excellent performance and what you can do is set affinity on each HLDS instance to each core (so maybe run 2 HLDS instances on each core equating to 8 HLDS instances).

P.S. On a completely different note, I am excited that Intel is being probed by the New York Attorney General on acts of Anti-Trust. What a wonderful thing; finally they will get what is coming to them. This year looks promising for AMD (their Q4 2007 reports were far better than anticipated) and H1 2008 has some good endeavors ahead.
