...is broken.

It just sort of randomly does that, drawing green or pink dots everywhere, when I run any program that uses 3D rendering. It can start after 10 minutes of my PC being on, or after 10 hours of my PC being on. It's very random. Once that happens, it draws the dots even over programs that don't use 3D.

I noticed that my video card fan had stopped spinning, but I was able to fix it magically. So the fan runs fine now, but my video card still goes crazy occasionally.

Does it look like an overheating problem or a completely @#$% crazy problem?

I'm certain that it's not my monitor, because 1) I was able to take a screenshot of it, and 2) when I press my monitor menu button, none of the crazy dots are drawn overtop of it.

Its definitely overheating. I had a similar issue after my card on my laptop overheated and my screen would go all nuts. I would still get sound and the PC would still be running, but the display would either go blocky or would look like that.

Just wondering, does it start to do it with Half-Life 1 based games? What about any other games? Source, etc? This is just for my reference, as i remember my card constantly doing it with HL1 based games, but in HL2/UT2004/Rainbow Six 3 it wouldn't occur as often.

I've only seen it happen with World of Warcraft (don't hate me), which holds the majority of times that this has happened, and Half-Life 1, since that's about all I have installed on my computer.

Either get proper cooling for your video card or underclock it.

stupok69: Radeon 9800 Pro. It was still a good card when I bought it.

sawce: But it's been working fine for at least two years, playing the exact same games, with the exact same other equipment in my PC. I'm not sure what brought it on.

This looks like you have tried to get more power than your video card can give to you.
(I got this problem i shut down computer and wait while it cooled) and it didnt have those things anymore, but i didnt have that much those things thought.

My guess would be the a lot of dust on the heatsink, or the thermal paste between the heatsink and the GPU itself needs replaced.

[X]-RayCat: I don't think that Half-Life 1 requires more power than a 9800 Pro is capable of outputting.

Or do like I did on my laptop when the vents stopped working and it was 35º C on Dominican Republic so I improvised and used a refreshing fan directly on it. Worked great while it lasted!
