I use Vista Ultimate x64. I like it. I had some issues with it at first, but they seem to have gone away, other than some strange lag in CS, but I don't really play CS anymore anyway.

With my short experience of all but Enterprise, go with Linux...

... no seriously, I think you'd do good with Home Premium. Depends alot though to what you actually do with your computer (care to share?). If you just surf the net, go with the cheapest.

I'm tempted to go with Ubuntu as my primary OS now that WINE is getting better...

@ micke1101

Go with the cheap one.

You should listen to what other people say about Vista, but only those who have had a fair time of usage with the OS.

I personally think Vista was a flop, a necessary flop for many to buy. The initial release was crappy, but by the monopoly state that Microsoft has, loads of people bought it. I hear Service Pack 1 fixes alot of things, but it still didn't want me to drop Linux or update my XP to Vista. (I admit it, I have to use XP for sound editing).

Anyway, I do believe that all operating systems are good for basic users, and recently I've started to root for Mac a lot. I've never used it, but it's got great feedback, and I hope many of those people who just use their computer for e-mail and internet would try out Mac, or even Linux. Didn't all those cheap-ass Linux computers Wal-Mart sell get sold out pretty quick?

Anyway, what I am trying to ramble here, is that you should pick your operating system based on what you want from it. Loads of people STILL buy XP along side a computer, because it's stabler, cheaper, and more reliable in many ways. If you're a gamer, the only reason you'd want Vista is DX10 support (this feature seems to play the key role in many debates I've had over Vista. ). For what you're doing, IMO, XP should do just fine, but seems like you also need the OS to look cooler so I guess your mind is made up, aye?

Anyway, I think stupok69 has the best solution for you so far, "Go with the cheapest one." With that usage, I don't think you'll need anything more. The more unnecessary things it has for you, the more unnecessary resources it will use... What do you think yourself?

@stupok69:
Been using Ubuntu as my main operating system for a long time now. About a year ago I dropped using XP at all, if it wasn't necessary (mostly meaning Adobe Audition 2.0 and some games). Works great for me! ^____^

Edit:
tl;dr : My opinion which no one cares about.

If you're a gamer and really want directx10, you should get Vista. I myself have Vista Home Premium 64 bit and it has ran very well for the past 6 months. Of course, it's on modern hardware but you shouldn't be getting vista without recent hardware anyways.

Vista is a good operating system. Treat it well like you did XP and it will run fine.

BTW Windows will drop support on XP soon, so why not get Vista now? Almost all the initial driver support problems and such have been solved.

You can pick up an OEM copy for like $100 on newegg.com
