i would say 1.6, and you would have to have a good mod that is popular but that doesnt have that many servers "on the market" for buying admin and popularity or you wont do very good as a competitor. I have a cz server and i can tell you its pretty hard to make money.. 1.6 or source seems like the better option. hope i helped.

well there is a surf server already so popular i dont think i can beat it and im 99% sure

well im not sure because cz and 1.6 mods arent different... but on each game they have different favorites. like some cz servers that are popular have... soccerjam, football, raptor, and hns... or scoutzknivez and either gun or knife map server, SKz + gun maps, SKz + knife maps is what i meant. and then there are the surf servers... I heard HidenSeek is VERY big on 1.6. im a cz player most of the time so thats just what ive heard.

I currently have a pred mod server in cz and it is hard to make your server popular.

some things that might make your server more fun depending on what mod you have...
- TK punishment
- Sank Sounds (admin type high or some word in console and in plays a .wav file) makes people happy, and when only admins can play it, it makes them want to buy admin.
- most popular maps that get the most people.
- possibly HLMP, im not sure what its called, but its where you type /hlmp or whatever it is and it gives you music on your server.
- admin models (if possible put your clan name on the back of the model or something and only allow admins to have them)
- fast download for models, .wavs, maps, etc.

those are all i can think of at the moment since i am very tired but im just trying to help you out, some things to think about, since i know its hard to make a profit when you are first starting out, also you might want to give like 3 or 4 trusted friends on CS limited admin to your server, because when there are admin people are more prone to play there since they know there is some enforcement if something isnt right and if you have sank sounds which only admins can use.

also the minimum price for most servers is usually $5, if your server is good enough than you will pay for your server in no time, if you price lower than that, you might have some conflicting admins since there might be so many, im just telling you from personal experience with it.

I recommend BAIL's CSDM, Avalanche's GUNGAME, and/or a normal CS 1.6 server.
