I don't know.
But. Today most of people are running CentOS or FreeBSD for their HLDS.
Both will run magnificently with some tweaks, though CentOS is easy to tweak as compare to FreeBSD.

Of course, with default kernel.

Yes. I've used it as it's user friendly and has a GUI which Ubuntu server lacks you've to be good enough to run every fucking thing through command lines.

If you're new to Linux world and you've just moved or using along with Windows then installing any desktop is better than going with command-lines shit.

Instead of burning CentOS in CDs you can rather burn it in 2 DVDs which will be the best bet for you. Otherwise Fedora isn't bad at all.

No Im familiar with ubuntu os from a year and I was just wondering if centos can perform better than my current server os ie: ubuntu server.

And Im not gonna install any gui for server. console is enough for me. Cause its mainly accessed by remote ssh.

If I want a minimal install will I need those all disks of centos ?

I've used CentOS 5.2 and 5.5 and Debian 5 for HLDS servers, I never needed to modify kernel and my servers worked great, modifying kernel is often used if you need your HLDS to have high and stable FPS, but for 1 or 2 servers it's not really needed. I've hosted more than 15 servers on Debian 5 with default kernel and it worked very nice servers had about 500-700 FPS and minimal CPU load and RAM usage.

On the other machine i use CentOS 5.2 and it works well too it little bit less uses CPU and RAM I think, as for the FPS it can vary from 300 to 800.

Best Regards!

Thanks Vita for the info. Can you tell me will CentOS requires all 8 disks for installation. Can I make a minimal installation using the 1st disk only ?.

And are you using amx on your servers ?. Any performance issue with amx over CentOS or Debian ?

No, for the minimal installation you only need the first disk. Other CDs have additional software for CentOS and are not required for the base system.

I had problem with Segmentation Fault error, and I have solved it by installing Metamod-P on CentOS. I'm running Metamod-P, AMXX 1.8.1, AMX Super, and some other third party plugins.

The FPS also depends on your CPU mostly.
