For future reference, I would suggest using this website for converting sound files, with these settings:
- Bit resolution: 16 Bit
- Sampling rate: 22050 Hz
- Audio channels: mono
I always do it like that and never experienced any problems.

Hi there,
I'm happy it worked for you.
As OciXCrom mentioned, the website that he's posted seems fine for conversions and the easiest way of converting audio file's metadata.
If you'd wanna be able to maintain "quality", and also want HL1 to support it, these are conversion settings I recommend and use without any problems.
WAV :- Bit resolution: 32-Bit Float PCM
- Sampling rate: 41000 Hz
- Audio channels: mono
MP3 :- Bit Rate: 320k
- Sampling rate: Less than 44100 Hz (4-Channel) [CD Quality]
- Audio channels: mono
Can't go wrong with that.
I've converted the tracks with a significantly complicated Audio Engineering and Production DAW called Ableton. I do not recommend using it as the link OciX posted does the job smooth and easy.
