It was apparently the cfg/cssdm/ config files. copy/pasting them from the convert your old config tool with vi into new files did not work. Not sure why.

In any case, on a hunch, I tried rotating those config files out and copying the "stock" ones provided with the cssdm plugin into place, then editing them manually.

Everything works properly now.

wow this runs so much better than 0.97...
