It's no secret that I use Gmail and have
Gmail Notifier in Firefox, checking the mail once per minute. That's how I'm always replying fast if I'm on the machine AND have something to say.

Ah, I seem to be partially blind for missing the post which recommends to add
-NoQueuedPacketThread to the Server's startup commandline. I don't have TF2 Server so I couldn't test.
On bro's Ubuntu, we don't use
-autoupdate switch.
