Technically the requirement comes from the fact that I put the copyright notices there to begin with. You are forbidden by the GPL from removing the copyright notices (practically all licenses do this).
There is a lot of irony in the situation for those familiar with what was happening back then. It appears that the copyright notices were removed in 2011 based on the bitbucket commits (
this commit).
