%d ist für eine zahl, z.b. new block_count
%s ist für einen string, z.b. new block_count[254]

natürlich funktioniert es auch mit deiner version, belegst aber 255 zellen mit deiner variablen, bei mir wird nur 1 zelle belegt.

wie hast du block_counter in der db definiert? INT?
