This seems to be what i described, here's my modified ClientScheme you can use it as is, or modify it to your liking, please note that it will modify some hud elements, such as player names, ammo icons, numbers, etc...

Regarding the first option, I did not find the files he is talking about in the l4d2 folders, so I didnt get too far.

The vanilla can be found inside left4dead2/pak01_dir.vpk using GCFScape to open it, inside that vpk, navigate to root/resource/ClientScheme.res, or just use the search function.

Also you need to add one of the following commands either in autoexec.cfg or modsettings.cfg
comment/uncomment depending on your video settings
