I can't say anything about nonsteam servers, it's illegal.
The MOTD in Left 4 Dead 2 is out of date and doesn't support SSL.
Therefore the server banner (host.txt) and the MOTD (motd.txt) must point to a webspace that has no SSL and no automatic SSL forwarding.
Possible Errors and Bugs
- MOTD and host banner is not displayed: The game MOTD does not support SSL or only to a limited extent therefore only use HTTP and the host banner should be on a non-SSL Webspace (subdomain)

The whole plugin could use an "update".
Unfortunately I don't have that much experience and time to rewrite the plugin from scratch, so I only provide a few fixes for the webstats and a modern template.
But if someone should be found who wants to rewrite the plugin, I am also ready to rewrite the webstats in PHP.
