Could you use the "Format" function inside the loop to create the string you want to print, and then print the entire string after the loop has ended?

Correct! It is temporarily set to a hardcoded value before being overriden by the Name function. I did warn you: "terrible idea". Just a little 'what if' concept that shouldn't actually be used.

I just tested this out, and it appears that it does fire when a player is forced to switch weapons due to running out of ammo.

Every spawn and every time you touch the cabinet, so I guess that is the same time as TF2Items_OnGiveNamedItem. I always just use that event as I find that "player_spawn" can be unreliable.
