I've been told that, because of the way Garry's Mod handles team names, the GetTeamName() function will often fail.
Unfortunately, there's no nice way of catching this as the API function doesn't...

I've been using sockets extension for TCP without issue, but I now need to use it with UDP and am hitting a problem.

Not really - this plugin doesn't inspect the log files. Instead, it hooks onto the Say and Say Team commands and logs the chat messages as soon as they occur.

If you have old log files you want...

Thanks for pointing this out - not something I'd tried!

I've modified the code so it won't throw a wobbler if the client is 0, but instead show [CONSOLE] and [??] respectively.

I've seen the features in the other plugins, but to be honest we just wanted a real simple way of logging just chat messages to a file - more to rip out the best bits easily and have a good laugh...

Thanks for the suggestion - it's implemented pretty much as you said. This behavior is on by default, but can be disabled by using the cvar above.
