Have you tried debugging? Put some server prints in to figure out exactly what number is wrong. You should also use cvar pointers.

No, that is the purpose of the flags used in get_players()

If specified, you can constrain which players are returned by flags:
"a" - Don't return dead players
"b" - Don't return alive players...
