There is no plan for a SourceMod 2.x, there are no plans to remove support for the pre-transitional syntax ever, and the transitional syntax is not complete yet.

I'm not sure if you picked a build at random (and was very lucky) or bisected, so just to verify (if the former), could you try out 1.7.0-git5090 (or confirm that you already have and it was broken)?

The SourceMod release broke it because it relied on undocumented internal behaviour, which was changed to make SourceMod safer to use, the change won't be reverted.

No, it compiles to exactly the same bytecode, it's just syntactic changes.
