Update post 24+ hours - sm_updater_status was still showing as "listed for update" and the plugin had not updated. I did a sm_updater_check which immediately updated the plugin successfully.

Worked...finally ! Did everything step by step...plugin is listed to update. Thanks for the help. Should go through without issues, will revert, if it doesn't

Any headway with the updater issue ? Couple of servers where in I was using 1.6.1 + updater plugin, are still not updated. Unless I have overlooked something in your post

I ran the forced update command. No luck didn't update

No I did not as mentioned in my earlier post, left the system as-is to check what happens. I will run it now and check again

Will check an revert after 24 hours if it has got updated in my server, I will avoid running sm_update_check for now

Do i have to setup anything else to auto-update the plugin apart from the setting in cfg file ? If no, then it doesn't seem to work, I have set it to update, it is still on 1.6.1 ver though you have...
