Hmm... It looks as if non-steam versions won't work. What if I install Steam and download HLDS from there? Would it work that way?

P.S.: I'm aware that forums like Alliedmodders don't discuss...

I did. Launching hlds.exe also leads to a crash, sooner or later. And I can't enter the game - "This command is not available to you at this time" and the camera stays at the predefined view points,...

Does copying hl.exe to the directory, where the downloaded files are, and running it count? It gave me the hw.dll error only.
