Building MMS and SM from HEAD works. I had to force load libvstdlib.so via LD_PRELOAD in order to get the MM library to load correctly. But once that was done, everything else worked flawlessly....

This was, indeed, the way we triggered MOTD popups (and had been working since early 2013). We'll be looking for a workaround or input from Valve.

You're likely not setting LD_LIBRARY_PATH correctly. Try replacing srcds_linux with srcds_run and have the script configure that environment variable.

We're also having this issue. CentOS 6.X x86 and x64 including freshly re-imaged servers.
