It's possible to override the model with the originals but I'm not sure if that would actually cause the bsp's overrides to go into effect or if it would just use TF2's.

Which in that case means the creator used a separate animations file that includes a copy of the original...

It's pretty much the same.

Just hex/compile the class.mdl to point to the new animation.mdl file, which in turn should point to the real class_animations.mdl file.

You kinda answered your own question.

If the files aren't being downloaded then obviously nobody is going to see the model. Go and double check the .dep file and the steps you took in that section.

I believe the sprite is used so the image can always be facing the player.

You still need to redirect the textures.

Only the tab on the right no longer needs to be used.
