it works, tested on steam, batch file renames hudnew.cmd to hud.txt,
and for mention hud.txt is also readable by engine if it is in /sprites directory
as you stated in your post they use...

source is a different game, i mean - physics sux, recoil sux, graphic sux(yup), gameplay sux
sourcemod nor sourceengine also does not provide such capabilities...

your dreams are not destroyed at all,
there's some sort of method based on a windows batch executable files(commands)
the only disadvantage is that client has to "click on" special button prepared...
