What is all those stuff? (Entites etc, limits)

Hello! I am not sure if this is the right section so please move it if it's in the wrong section. I have a few questions, and to make it easier I play Half Life 1.

What is all those "limits" people talk off? What is entites? Like, what is a couch ingame? Is it a ent? How can you bypass limits? Like, can you put 500505050 NPC's on your server next to each other or will you be stopped because of the limits? Can you have as many models? sounds? etc.

Please help. I am completely lost. thank you!

Re: What is all those stuff? (Entites etc, limits)

I once saw a thread on these forums with this quote that I saved,

Quote:

Alrighty, I have added a "-num_edicts <x>" command line option to the HL1 engine. Run the game with "-num_edicts 2048" to get more entities into a level. The maximum possible value depends on your specific mod code and memory constraints so feel free to play around with various values, just don't drop below 900. ... .
But to answer your question, an entity is the same as the word means in real life. It can be an object, physical or non-physical, containing properties that can affect gameplay or be the gameplay. For instance, your bedroom is the map but you are an entity in it, as is your moving chair and your mirror. Your bed could be a separate entity, but often they are built into the map for efficiency purposes as fewer entities often provides less cramped gameplay.

So like, a couch or a chair in a game map is an entity? Why do some people remove them? How can it help? Is it because of HL1 limits? Is there like a limit on how many chairs you can put in there? As far as I know. I don't think so because.. I think it has to do with like a certain number of entites precached.. or? Thanks for your post.. but I think I need a beginners introduction to the HL1 limits, entites, precaching etc.. can't you go a bit into that? Please, thanks!
