How do unix/linux users develop plugins? (programs etc...)

I recently got a macbook pro and was wondering how people code in unix/linux...

I.E. Do you use a GUI for CVS or command line? What editors do you use - I'd prefer something like editplus for windows over using vim/emacs.

Any advice would be great, thanks!

'Cause there's no Notepad, you use the TextEditor.
