Folder standards

As I am working on plugins and see other plugins I am a little confused as to what us as custom plugin coders should be using for saving various files.

Should we save our custom config files in the configs folder or should this folder be reserved for the amxx core config files?

What exactly is supposed to be going in the custom folder? Config files? or is this to be used for misc output stuff ands custom vault files?

Thanks. If this has been posted someplace else I did not see it. sorry.
