Hldsupdatetool very slow

Hi

When I run an update with Hldsupdatetool (under Windows Server 2003) it takes forever to download all the updated files. It seems to pause 2 or 3 times during the update for as long as 20 minutes a time, the update can take as much as an hour in total.

I know a lot of people complain about how long updates take, but does anyone have any solutions to speed it up?

I have tried putting preferred content servers in Steam.cfg but the update seems to ignore those. Any other ideas?

Cheers!

Nothing you can really do aside from making sure you run the instance on a fast server/core/memory etc. I run several instances of TF2 on the same machine 8 cores, 8 gigs of ram etc etc they go a little faster if I don't do them all at once but its the nature of the beast.

My hope is, and it will never happen is that valve give servers priority over update content ahead of clients.

Thats what I figured. When I update I just update one vanilla install then copy the updated files from that, saves a bit of time. Server and connection are pretty good, its just the way it 'stalls' a few times during the update process that doesn't seem right to me

I notice it changes content server a few times during the process too, is that normal?
