L4D2 - Horde spawns and network lag

Hey, I was wondering if anyone knows of a way to reduce network lag when a panic event starts or when someone gets boomered, because as it is now each time someone get vomited on the server will start to lag, for me it is ok, but the other clients get massive pings from 60 it rises for them to 450+ and becomes unplayable, people usually quit when that happens.

It seems to be related to hordes of zombies being spawned.

Are there any settings that may help or cfg's ?

I only got 1mbits up, so say around 90KB upload speed.

Any help would be appreciated.

Get a better connection. You can't really reduce the lags if the server have to send lots of packets, and can't.

I would also like to see your PC specifications, because bad performance could also be a reason.

Well my system really shouldnt be a problem, the server doesn't use much cpu and I can play the game while hosting a server at the same time just fine without any performance issues.

This happens with or without me being in game, anyway here are my system specs:

Intel Core 2 Quad 9550 (stock clocks 2.8ghz)
8800 GTS 512 (evga)
Asus P5QC motherboard
4GB DDR3
Windows 7 64 bit

Well perhaps my internet spikes the upload sometimes, in a month I will be upgrading to cable, I'm currently using adsl 8megabit down / 1 megabit up. the upgrade will only have slightly better upload though, 25 megabits down and 1.5 megabits up.

Thanks for trying to help out, much appreciated.

Removing the Left4DeadToolz extension seemed to lessen the issue a bit, but it still happens sometimes.

This seems to be a network related issue. Also try join your server with net_graph on, and check for lag. Look for the high choke value, if it's there, it's clearly your connection.

Re: L4D2 - Horde spawns and network lag

Thanks, it does indeed bottleneck my upload, when there are no horde surges the server goes along happy at around 40 to 70KB/s upload once the panic or hordes spawn then it spikes up to 115KB/s and it even tried to go as far as 200KB/s but that must have been a fart because I can't reach such a upload speed.

The slight upgrade could help, but if that wants to spike to 200KB/s It maybe cause lag as well, so for 8 players smooth gameplay you would need nearly 2mbps upload speed? xd

Also tried to disable server voice chat in an attempt to lessen the lag a bit, but it does not seem to help very much.

xd

Disabling the voice chat will not help at all, because it takes like 1% of the bandwidth (ok maybe a bit more then 1%, but if you speak and look at the net_Graph at same time, the voice does not create high spikes)

I've only seen a few servers with a bad upload speed, and yes, they lag like hell when horde spawns. I've been playing on one a while ago, when nothing happend, the choke and loss rates were fine, but when a horde spawned, choke increased to 25 and loss kept being on 3-8. This never happend on my server and i never had connection problems before (i've also tweaked my rates a bit, so i have better hit registration)

But 1 mbit is about 125 kb/s upload if my calculations are fine, and this should be enough. You can try limiting sv_maxrate and sv_maxupdaterate to .. ehm let's say 25000 and 33. You server is running with default tickrate and fps, right?

Yes it is running at default settings, I will try to change those, and see what happens, thanks for your advice :)

Still lagging, choke over 50.
