Coding competitions!

That's right, coding competitions.
How many people would be down for coding competitions?

Rules would be simple:
  • Competition would be given a prompt for a project. The project could be a number of things, plugin/shero/fuction/code snippet/etc.
  • Will have a date set for completion. Competition length would vary depending on how much work is involved in the project.
  • There will be buy-ins for the competition. Amount will vary by difficulty of the work.
  • It will be a winner-take-all competition.
  • Winner will be chosen by a panel of judges. (Judges will be picked, do not ask to be a judge.)
  • Judges will be allowed to enter there work into the competitions.

Judging Procedure:
  • Judging will be done anonymously. Meaning that all entries will be anonymously given to all the judges. So no one will be able to know what entry belongs to what entrant.
  • Judging will take place over a week or more depending on the number of entries and the size of all the entries.
  • Judging will be done "elimination-style." Meaning all judges get all the entries and each judge picks which one they like the best. Then all the judges picks will be re-judged by all the judges. And the process continues until they all reach one entry.
  • In the case of a stalemate in judging. The entry with the most judge's pick will be the winner.

Judging will be based on:
  • Functionality
  • Readability
  • Performance
  • Complexity (Not always a good thing)
  • Clarity of intent. Meaning variable naming, code organization, comments, and etc. should show us what the code should be doing.
  • Coding style will not be a factor, however inconsistent coding styles will be.

Any suggestions or comments are welcomed.

Reminds me of the Obfiscrated? total typo im sure. coding contest.

However actual coding contests would be fun.

and as an off comment I think the end code should be kept on database record ;) would be fun to look at everyone else's code after contest is done.

:) Love the idea, but to conserve space only the entries left after the first round will be kept on record.

I have stopped coding primarily due to the repetition and dullness of it; hardware is so much more fun :). Plus being in college doesn't help with time constraints.

On the note of your quote, I would be willing to loan some web space & bandwidth to store the files because I to would like to see all of the entries, not just the ones after the first round; those are the fun ones, the ones that make no sense ;).

Obfuscated? As in the antonym of elucidated?

I'm thinking they would be fun, but I don't know about prize-based ones, maybe just a for-fun / for-kudos comp'.

Re: Coding competitions!

i dont recall how the word was spelt, but the competition was to make a piece of code that was horrible. And as long as it wasnt huge and compiled without errors / X # of warnings it was ok to be submitted.

said nothin about prize based.

Re: Coding competitions!

Obfuscated code would be code that is hard/impossible to read.

To obfuscate something is to make it hard to understand or to see.

EDIT: And the prize bit was on the subject of this thread, rather than obfuscated code.
