Need help determining your rates? Look Here
Okay, since I am tired of people making topics asking what rates they should use instead of searching for their own answers, I am making 1 topic for all rate help topics. So, if you need help figuring out what rates you should have, post here but read through the thread first as there will most likely be useful links posted by others.
Any threads that are made asking about rates will be trashed or merged into this one (depends on my mood when I see it). If helpful links/posts are made, I will link to them in this thread so others can hopefully see it without re-asking it Sites to help calculate your rates: http://www.reece-eu.net/drekrates.php Sites to test your internet speed: http://www.speedtest.net/ |
Re: Need help determining your rates? Look Here
This is a great website to use to calculate your rates :

Re: Need help determining your rates? Look Here
How i can test my internet speed if my server is linux? :)
|
Re: Need help determining your rates? Look Here
What? Linux has nothing to do with you bandwidth speed.
|
Re: Need help determining your rates? Look Here
I believe he's having hard time to go to the website via linux.
On windows you can just type www.speedtest.net in a web browser and see results. But also I dont have any idea to how to that on linux (ubuntu 7), so I'd pretty happy if someone would told me how to do it. I've set up rates depending on our PC and approx. bandwith that ISP promised, but I do experience slight lags in-game (and it's not PC problem, it's damn powerful to hold holy crapload of servers) |
Re: Need help determining your rates? Look Here
Linux has a internet browser as well.... Unless you don't have any GUI stuff and it is only CLI.
|
Re: Need help determining your rates? Look Here
Why would anyone with only the CLI at his/her disposal be unsure about the available bandwidth? If you're running a server on a machine at home with the CLI only, you probably have another, GUI-enabled computer on which you can do all kinds of silly tests. If your server is located in a datacenter, you hopefully know what you're paying for.
Anyway, if you only have the CLI, you can use wget, ftp or mc and many many more programs. |

For first time, try these: Quote:
It was the first step. The second step is to adjust rates to your server's bandwidth. You should play on server with active netgraph (net_graph 3) and monitor choke value - it should not get higher than 5-10. If you have a lot of choke, you should increase sv_minrate. Also, don't forget that you will get effect of server-side rates changing only after reconnect. |
rates configuration server 32 slots
Commands are the rates to maintain a server of 32 slots with a low and stable ping?

The perfect rates
From Speedtest.net, this is my result:
Download 8.64Mb/s Upload 0.72Mb/s Can someone help me determine the best possible rates for me? I run a 16 man server. Also, help me determine the best possible fps_max & sys_ticrate. I run Pentium D 3.00GHz and have 4.00GB of RAM. |
Re: The perfect rates
Quote:
Up Speed: 735 kbps/sec CPU Speed: 3000 Mhz Core: 1 (Not Necessary) Ram: 4096 MB Players:16 What I got was: sv_minrate 0 sv_maxrate 5453 sv_minupdaterate 4 sv_maxupdaterate 18 I would advice you to use sys_ticrate 100 and fps_max 101 (1 higher to sys_ticrate). Well You can look yourselves too or wait for other good replies. |
Re: The perfect rates
Thanks for the help, but can you please tell me the reason to use sys_ticrate 100 and fps_max 101 and not higher? Will setting it higher gives performance boost?
|
Re: The perfect rates
Quote:
Why use sys_ticrate 100 if sv_maxupdaterate 18 ?? It should be minupdaterate 30 and maxupdaterate 60 or higher ? And what important is upload... 735 kbps/sec is very minimal. Can't host 16 players server perfectly. Now it show maxrate 5000 (if enough and players not lag then ok) You maybe have to decrease amount of player slots to get this rate higher... (or get better broadband/upload) With max. 10 players server you can give maxrate 9000 and sv_minupdaterate should be also 30 |
Re: The perfect rates

Well about the question of Why I use sys_ticrate 100 cause:

Re: The perfect rates

Blame it! Not me! I've not calculated those formulas. |
Re: The perfect rates
unstable rates indeed...
|
Re: The perfect rates
In conclusion, the perfect rates for my server are?
|
Re: The perfect rates
Quote:
If you try 16 player server... (what is impossible with that broadband) sv_minupdaterate 33 sv_maxupdaterate 100 sv_minrate 3000 sv_maxrate 5400 One problem is can't host whole upload 735kbps... server need sent also different information/packets, so I added to this 5%. Now it's 698kbps to players. Could appear choke and lag If want better rates have to drop player slots. example ... host 4 player server you can set sv_maxupdaterate 20000 |
Re: The perfect rates
I actually checked, and you might be able to have 8-10 players. (With somewhat stable rates)
