running minecraft server

i started a minecraft server it's honestly just a vanilla survival server for me and my friend i have 8gb of ram and i allocated 4GB just for the server maybe that's a bit too much just for 2 players? but i want things to run smoothly anyway

so what i wanna know is, is there anything else i should change or any plugins to install to make the server run more smoothly and without any lag at all? i don't wanna install any mods that CHANGE THE GAME i want it mostly vanilla however i don't mind datapacks

i used to run a Counter Strike 1.6 server back in the day and there were scripts for it like "AMX MOD X" and i wonder if there is anything like that for minecraft servers?

i read something about fabric servers? but I'm omeglz not sure what that is

Depending on which version of minecraft you have running:

Using Spigot or Bukkit is one option to run that you mean (scripts). Other option is Mohist, which works for run Forge mods and Spigot plugins at the same time in your server.

If you wanna optimize but let your server be more vanilla, i recommend you to use Spigot and just install plugins like ClearLagg or a TPS optimization plugin.

Running a Minecraft server for you and your friend sounds like a lot of fun! Allocating 4GB of RAM for just two players might be a bit on the high side, but if you want things to run smoothly, it should be fine.
To make your server run even smoother without any lag, you might want to consider a few things. First, make sure you have a stable internet connection and that your server hardware meets the requirements. You can also optimize your server settings for better performance.
If you're interested in adding some extra excitement to your server without changing the vanilla feel too much, you might like "Raboy's Zombie Apocalypse" datapack from https://modbay.org/mods/655-raboys-zombie-apocalypse.html/. It adds a zombie survival element to the game, perfect for spicing up your vanilla experience!

For optimal performance with just two players, 4GB of RAM is plenty. To keep things running smoothly, consider installing PaperMC, which is a high-performance fork of Spigot and is known for reducing lag. For a mostly vanilla experience, you can also use lightweight plugins like ClearLag to help manage server resources. Fabric is another server mod that supports performance-enhancing mods and datapacks without altering the core game mechanics.
