Linux is an OS or a platform like Windows?

Hi there..
I'm struggling to figure it out, if Linux is an operating system then what the hell are others? Such as MINT, DEBIAN, UBUNTU, REDHAT, etc..

If it is a platform like Windows, then what you're using, would you use, would you recommend me and which is the best edition of Linux (Specially for HL1 Servers)?
And how many of you host a HL1 Servers on s Linux?

In Win32 platform I've used 98, 2000, XP, Server 2003, Vista, Se7en.
I've have NOT used Server 2008 YET!
Moving to Linux.

I'm a little twelve years of kid, you can't say Google is your friend or something like that. :)

Linux is a kernel. Linux Mint, Debian GNU/Linux, Ubuntu, Red Hat Enterprise Linux, etc. are Linux distributions.

Google is your friend.

, and Linux distributions are SOs made by joining a Linux kernel and a bunch of applications. For example, Fedora tries to include the newest packages, while Debian goes for stability, and Mint focus on beauty and ease of use.

It's the Linux kernel who is known for being good at serving, not a specific distribution. You should go for a more stable distribution though, like Debian or CentOS. Before hosting servers on Linux, hack your way trough 2 or 3 distributions so you can see what's better to you.

If you're looking for recommendations, here's a small talk I had with quim about Gentoo and his recommendations for beginners in Linux. This was a while ago via PM, he might have some other input and I'm sure he'll end up chiming in soon.

Linux is more powerful than Windows in the way that it is built by the community, its source is not a secret, you can control every part of it, you do not became dependent on closed source software build by multinational companies, you interact more with the OS, you increase your knowledge just by using it and experience with it is more valuable for systems administration.

If you want to be a user that controls the environment go linux. If just for using the OS as a tool and disregard stuff like making the tool fit yourself, stay on Windows.

Try both of them.

Unfortunately, I don't know how to get my messages that I sent from the PM feature on the forum. He also doesn't do the quotes in PM, so I couldn't get them from there either.

Reading some more articles about it, I've decided to go with Mint 9 which is the best edtion of recent time.
Also, Seta00 is using it at the moment, thanks to 8088 too.

Please, lock this topic. :)

--Thanks.

Keep in mind that Linux Mint is a desktop OS. If you plan on using Linux to solely run HLDS, you might want to go without a GUI instead to preserve your precious resources for HLDS.

In that case what would you prefer, ny friend?
Please, share your knowledge. Which is the best Linux edtion to host a HLDS(s)?

Try Ubuntu Server, or CentOS.

Re: Linux is an OS or a platform like Windows?

It's really a matter of personal preference. Nearly everything can be accomplished by using any distribution, it's all up to the user.

A small, subjective, inconclusive comparison between the major distributions:
-yum versus aptitude: CentOS, Fedora versus Debian, Ubuntu
-bleeding edge versus proven stability: Fedora, Ubuntu versus Debian, CentOS

If you're going to be running this from your home computer and not hosted else where, go with a GUI edition like 'Linux Mint', if it's going to be hosted at a real hosting company, having a GUI is pointless, and I would recommend Debian over the other flavors. (Distributions are also referred to as flavors). It has been around the longest and has had a steady track record of being reliable and fast.

I found that image quite enlightening.

Thanks.

@Xanimos
I'm planning for my home computer, indeed GUI is a pointless for me (It's all about BEST performance).

Debian seems to me is the right choice and just what I need.

Btw, those graphs are pretty much congested! Lol.
Thank you very much.

I'm running my servers (web, game, ftp, etc.) on Fedora Core 6. From what I was told Fedora is the "testing grounds" for things that get implemented into RedHat.

Fedora is essentially a free version of RedHat Enterprise (both developed by Red Hat Inc), so that would sound about right. I use Fedora 12 on my boxes, but they aren't just used for game servers.

I wouldn't go as far as calling Fedora a free version of RHEL, more like a free product of RedHat. But if there is one, it's definitely CentOS.

Ubuntu is the real allrounder. That's why I prefer to go with it!

If by allrounder you mean highly funded mainstream fork of Debian that has modified versions of nearly every package, then I agree with your statement.

Re: Linux is an OS or a platform like Windows?

At first I liked Fedora over some others that I used because it has colored text for files on commands like "ls". OH, and syntax highlighting for many languages in VI. All through SSH.
