Ten Years of Half-Life

Since it's already midnight here, I'll take a head start and post this thread.

That's right bitches, 10 years. I myself remember my brother buying the game early '99. I was 8 years old, and that game was to change my life forever. I had played games before that, but nothing really kept me as interested as this. The atmosphere was so scary for the mini-me. I mean, the characters looked so realistic comparing to earlier games, especially the monsters. It took me months to actually finish the game, but when I did... I had never been that impressed by a game, ever. (Well, maybe Super Mario Bros. 3, but that's a whole other thing :P ).

Now, looking back at that, ten years later; Damn I am happy that I got to play it, and have played it through so many times since. I mean, nowadays it takes just a couple of hours - I sometimes play HL at school when I am bored. But still, if I had never played Half-Life, I probably would have never become a gamer. And if I hadn't become a gamer, I would've never become so interested in computers... and next spring I will get my paper as an "ICT assembler" or "electronics assembler", whatever the name is nowadays. I am also a quite respected member in the best Half-Life scripting community around

Needles to say, HL changed the path of my life. And now it's time to fucking celebrate that! Tomorrow, or, well, today since it's past midnight, I will start a Half-Life marathon. I will play HL, OpFor, BShift, HL2, the episodes and Portal in a chronological order. Hell, I'll probably drop by the liquor store tomorrow and buy a small bottle of something just for this occasion.

But as for the discussion, did Half Life ever have an impact in your life? Were you even aware that it's been 10 years already? What are you gonna do to celebrate this, or are you gonna do anything?

Discussion's open for anyone, but I wish those 12-year-olds who never touched the game because "the graphics suck" would keep their mouths shut.

Also, thanks to Gaben. "They're waiting for you Gordon. In the test chamber"

Build networks, server management, electronics in general, computer stuff in general (from building the computers to installing all the crap), device repairing (devices as in home electronics and such), embedded systems, programming and electronics design.

Damn, that sounds cool. :P

Edit: I think the name of the profession changed this year... but no one bothered to tell us. However, we just might be the last class to become electronics assemblers, but the new students in the school will become ICT assemblers, I think. (What a stupid name, ICT assembler)

I know I've never played Half-Life, maybe for 5 seconds and got annoyed 'cause I suck, but Amen to that! :crab:

Next Goal: 20 years!

'Tis my third and last year. I should be starting a blag about my final assignment soon. Basically it's a project to automatize stuff in my apartment - I should be able to make coffee, adjust lights, water my chili's, turn on my computers etc. through internet or with my cellphone. :)

I have the tools and the knowledge. It'll all come down to if I have enough time and budget. But we'll see. My goal is to be able to make coffee with a web (possibly browser) based application from school, when I have to return the assignment.

But anyway, 'tis getting way too OT, back to the topic, pwees.

/me waits for the old grumpy people to take over the thread :P

Back in the day, I couldn't figure out how to finish a level and I gave up. I don't think I ever actually finished the game. Oh, and the houndeye's were f*cking scary and very annoying.

Re: Ten Years of Half-Life

I actually never beat HL.
I got lost somewhere in the beginning.
I think I may have finished in Sven Co-op with a few friends who have played it before.
I've never played OpFors (whatever that is) or Blue Shift.

However, I did start Half-Life 2, and a few friends played with me (talking in ventrilo while playing, waiting at checkpoints for each other).
We got to the zombie town, and we didn't finish from there.
This summer, we got a co-op for HL2 games called Synergy.
We then finished Half-Life 2, and HL:2 Ep1, and HL:2 Ep2.

I did play the HL training mission 9999 times though. It never got bored cause I would shoot the guards that help and run away! :D
I don't think that I would've ever gotten into gaming if my older brother never played Half-Life.
He was the one that introduced me and I would always watch him play.
After he beat it, he moved onto Counter-Strike, which I remember him playing much more.
I got into CS a little and starting playing in random pubs like twice a week.
I remember playing Ricochet online, and that shit was so much fun! :D

I just got deeper and deeper into CS.
Then, one of my friends would come over and play it all the time.
I got a little angry with that cause he would play CS more than hang out with me, so I quit CS for a while.
Then, a few months later, I started playing again.
And, then a long line of my CS history until now. :)

Re: Ten Years of Half-Life

I remember when I first got HL i was working on a large project and frustrated as hell. The buyers were pressuring me to finish and I was at a mental block. So I got the game and would play for a while and then work, then play, then work. Somehow that got me through the mental block and I finished the painting shortly after. People like to think that artists sit by waterfalls in nice peaceful settings to get inspiration. I get mine shooting ppl in CSS.

Heh. I wonder how many Finnish marks it cost back in the day.

Good job, though :)

I started HL yesterday, Steam sez I played 0.9 hours. I didn't run so much as I've used to during the past few years, so I am pretty close to the end of "On A Rail." Gonna finish the game tonight and start Opposing Force. :)

Anyhow, waiting for more stories about peoples HL history. Interesting stuff ^. I really thought that everybody here has finished HL by default. :crab:

That can't be the true. The introduction that can't be skipped is about five hours long.

I never completed Half-Life either, but because there was part of a later level that would unavoidably crash my copy of the game. :( I might play my Steam copy one day. I own but haven't played all the HL2-based games.

Unfortunately I don't have an international credit card, so I can't buy it. Anyone willing to buy it for me (can trade for code if you want).

Re: Ten Years of Half-Life

Half-Life 1 was probably the most interesting game I've ever played along with Fallout 1/2 and Planescape: Torment.

Aside from that, writing stuff for it was fun.

@PM:
Hello, PM.

Fallout 2 was truly epic. I am gonna get the new one, it looked mighty interesting. Cool, that they have gotten new ideas to the game, but still keeping it Fallout style, especially with the humor and fighting. :)

Half-Life has made me the programmer I am today. It for many years took up a large part of my life, especially Counter-Strike whilst playing with my friends. 'nuff said.

Now, where the hell did that hound eye run off to...
