Hey,

Im looking for a good, fast, webhost on the west coast for shared hosting. Mainly I need to run Sourcebans and fast downloads on it for my San Francisco servers. I need lots of bandwidth and space. Sourcebans support meens it needs to let SB query servers and let my gameservers communicate with their mysql server. Any suggestions?

http://www.godaddy.com/ has some good prices. But I don't know that you can choose where anything is hosted geographically. I wouldn't think it would matter much to begin with.

Actually, using them for this is against their ToS. From the ToS, it states
14. upload, post, email, transmit or otherwise material for the purposes of file distribution, relay, or streaming reasons.

Not if you pay for it....but the 4.84 isnt entirely true :/

4.84 x 36 = 174.24.

How is it not correct?

Well you have to bind yourself to a 3 year contract else its the other prices that is.

You didn't research GoDaddy before using their services?

Im using 102hosting right now and when i downloaded a file off my webhosting plan. I actually downloaded at 1.5 mb/s. Its only 2.50 for a nice amount of webspace and bandwidth

Just dont register a domain there, register a domain at godaddy or something.

BOYSplayCS

Do NOT use GoDaddy. Just a little warning.

JoeS

Why? I used namecheap for my domain and they are pretty good. Also, godaddy isnt that bad. I used them before

I think im going to need more than that. I didnt need Godaddy for fast DL or Sourcebans at the time. Now I need one for all and there seems to be a shortage of good webhosts on the west coast.

I've heard bluehost.com is pretty good from bl4nk. I believe they are based on the west coast.

DontWannaName

Bluehost is the same thing as hostmonster. They both use cogent and are in LA. They cap bandwidth to 1.5mbps burstable and have no where to test the speed.

Maybe I should just host my website from my house haha.

03-02-2009, 00:07
Wow, if I had that kind of speed I would. All you need is a webserver (I use a Linux box running Apache webserver) and you would need a domain name and a service such as DynDNS to route your domain to your dynamic IP.

DontWannaName

I have an old P4 desktop in storage that works ok, dunno the status of the HD and whats in it but I know its there. I know nothing about hosting websites or about linux sadly. My domain is with Godaddy though and my IP can change a lot.

CrimsonGT
03-02-2009, 04:08
That would work fine, and you can always setup a IP redirect with one of those free sites. So that something like thisip.righthere.com points to your IP address no matter if it changes, then just point the domain to the redirect.

And to hell with linux, you could run it fine with windows. Just make sure to read up on the security and what not. Its pretty easy to setup Apache/MySQL/Php, theres even a package but I cant remember the name, but it installs them all for you. I set it up when I rented a quad core windows box.

I bet fast download wouldnt be so fast though :( Plus I know nothing about any of those, if cpanel was free it would help haha.

HostGator? I've used them for a good while. Their download speeds were good to my server for the short time I used it, the remote SQL connections were...TOO fast, never had a problem with that. I never used Sourcebans though, sorry. I used the TF2 stats plugin with the web interface.

DontWannaName

Thats because host gator is located on the east coast close to you. I need west coast.

Your statement is partially incorrect. They have data farms in WA/UT and are not capped depending on your account. Request a different server location and purchase a ded ip. Been using them for years and haven't looked for anybody else. Their customer service is un-rivaled.

DontWannaName

They have no where to test my download speed and it doesnt look very promising since they are using cogent.

Well surprisingly after reading this thread, I started thinking and decided to change my webhost. I have been looking at options all night, because the host I have been with since 2004 gives me 20GB of bandwidth a month and 600mb of space for 7.95$

After hours of searching, I finally stumbled back across HostGator which I have heard from numerous people is excellent. I went ahead and ordered my new service tonight, and I cannot wait. Its a big freaking jump going from 20gb BW to Unlimited, and 600mb of space to Unlimited, and 5 mysql databases to Unlimited, and so on lol.

I was gonna go with the business package for 12.99$ a month, but I realized all I would really be getting is the free 1-800 number and more domains. So I went with the baby gator package for like 4$ because it has everything I need unlimited :o The part I was dreading was moving all my files and stuff over from my current host to hostgator. If you fill out a form they do it all for you, so im pretty much in love now.

Anyways, I signed up for the referral program after I ordered hosting from them tonight, so if your interested in them feel free to use my link!
http://secure.hostgator.com/cgi-bin/affiliates/clickthru.cgi?id=crimsongt

*Edit*

Oh yeah, until April the promocode "lucky" gives you 20% off, so I paid 67$ for a year lol. Cant freaking beat that.

Yes but their servers are with the Planet which are based in Dallas, good for Florida, bad for west coast. Media Temple has a package for 16 bucks, they host all the fortune 500 websites like ABC and stuff. I think they can guarantee good speed. It seems like all the premium bandwidth is from the people that seem really expensive like 20mb of space and 20 gigs of bandwidth. My new host is nice, I get 600 kb/s but I crave more for my 30mb DL line plus for all the people that need to download maps super fast.

03-03-2009, 11:02
Why not go with something in central north america so you don't limit your player base?

If it's central, east players can go, west players can go, and so can central.

Besides if this is just for a fast dl server it's not really going to make any impact if it's a few hundred miles difference.
Are those 15ms differences going to make your download go that much slower? Probably not

SilentJudge

Media Temple has had issues too, theres some negative reviews on WHT.
http://www.webhostingtalk.com/showthread.php?t=752850&highlight=mediatemple+review
They've historically had issues with their GRID stuff. The high profile sites hosted by them are not on their GRID service, they are on dedicated servers (which they offer, see Nitro).

MT is way expensive I think. Unless you're using their VPS solutions, i see no reason to use them. As far as HostGator, I've heard nothing but good things. Hope your experience goes well. Shitty thing about unmetered/unlimited services is that in the ToS, 99% of the time, they will swap your account to what is "reasonable" to them depending on your traffic. My account was unmetered for over a year until I started up another project and using around 500gigs of traffic per month. They re-adjusted my traffic real quick.

As far as Cogent, I have absolutely no problems. It serves a great connection for my users worldwide. Literally, worldwide. My site feeds around 750 kb/s down. I think my webserver is on the Utah data farm for Hostmonster.

DontWannaName

I wouldnt mind testing their download speed if anyone had a 10mb I could download on their hostmonster or bluehost site. 3 days left to decide.

If you want really fast DL speeds, get a VPS from a decent provider. That way, you can run your own MySQL server as well.

VPS's are too expensive and you usually get less bandwidth than you would get with shared.

Shared Hosting is oversold, can be slow during certain hours, and has more downtime. :)

Theres ups and downs to both obviously.

While true, but if you think you're gonna get anywhere NEAR what most shared hosts are advertising, you're dreaming.

At least (some/most) VPS hosts are honest about what you get for service.

Bandwidth costs money. So does hardware. $8 a month (x100 clients) will barely pay for the cabling needed in a DC, let alone any bandwidth or servers....

That said. For simple webhosting, Hostgator is my pick. I hear bluehost will allow stuff like stats, so I can't see sourcebans being restricted.

And for what your game server will put on an SQL DB, Cogent would do fine. East Coast would probably also do fine. Map distros could be in the UK as long as it's fast and no one would care.

I think it runs like 9 bucks a month 8 something if you sign up for a year.
But that gives me unlimited bandwidth and storage. Both the [AE] Clan account and my own personal are signed up with them. The have a lot of 1 click install features mysql data bases shell and ftp access.

Sorry hope it's not too late. Oh and when I signed up my personal account through the link I got 50 bucks off.

I decided to go with lunar pages. It was 68 bucks for 2 years with great speeds and free domain registration. Dreamhost is expensive for what you get and they wouldnt even give me a link to test my speed, they said sign up first and see... not what I was looking for.

Crap. The bandwidth may be good, but the disk space is pure crap. The ToS also do not allow using the host as a FastDL host, but why would you want to anyways with that amount of diskspace.

I second Lunarpages, but i'm partial because I work for them. This also means that I use their servers lol and can vouch for how awesome they are. VMAN is correct, they have datacenters in San Diego, Riverside and Vegas. I run my site and my Sourcebans from their servers. I also run the SQL Advertisement plugin, permanent muting across servers, chat log, and I used to run the L4D stats plugin all from LP.

Check their plans at www.lunarpages.com/solutions/

I went with Lunar. Their CP needs some updating, I think the cpanel is out of date but it works fine and is all I need. Sadly their DL speeds are faster than DLing from my game server box and the server is farther away haha. I dont know if cogent is really good bandwidth but my speeds appear fine.

Icettiflow
07-02-2009, 10:38
Mind telling me your server name? Don't need any account details.

If you're on a Linux box, all cPanels are the current 11 release, but lemme know and i'll be glad to check. Also, LP doesn't cap speeds so it depends on your connection.

DontWannaName
07-03-2009, 00:48
Im on Pride. Its a dual quadcore it says. My motd script got caught for using too many resources. I copied it and renamed it and turned on caching hehe. Lunar had a beta CP out but it would mean a machine switch and stuff so I gave up. It has mod_bwlimited on apache. It says its the 11 release but it says msql 5.0, 5.1 is the latest i think. How many connections at once from external servers does the mysql server allow, since I have all 8 of my servers connecting to it at once through multiple mods and databases.

Icettiflow
07-03-2009, 10:02
Hey DWN, there's a maximum of 50 SQL connections PER SQL USER, so if necessary you can split it between two users and even assign each user to each database if you want through cPanel.

Regarding cPanel, all Linux environments have the latest version of cPanel, however, the admins are constantly updating the PHP and MySQL versions and other compiled components on the servers. With as many as Lunar has this is essentially a never ending process. If you ever have an issue where you MUST HAVE a specific version and it's not available on your server just open a ticket and we'll be glad to move you to a server with the feature if it's available.

There's no charge, and no downtime for the move

Icettiflow

If you are running a script using SQL such as Sourcebans and you attempt to load that page, it will instead show the error that you have exceeded max connections for that user.
