Can't post in the News section but:

Latest version is v1.17.4 (Feb 19).

Notable changes in this version are listed below. See also the release notes for more explanation, or the full changelog for more details.

Mod recognition and entities for Brain Bread 1.2, and Snow-War 2.0.
Additional entities for Science & Industry 1.0, and Rival Species 1.2.
Updated recognition and entities for Gangsta Wars 2.7. Note this removes support for Gangsta Wars 2.6 since 2.7 is incompatible with 2.6.
Fixed a potential memory leak on plugins loading.
Fixed a memory initialization issue.
Fixed an indexing bug that could cause errors in meta list.

Actually, the newest version is available at Jussi Kivilinna's website: http://koti.mbnet.fi/axh/. This is version 1.17.4p19 built on the 27th.

Jussi takes the original Metamod and mods/optimizes it. This should be considered a secondary option because optimizations can cause problems with certain server hardware. But by all means try it if you like!

Funny though he says that you never have to update Metamod anymore and yet, now you do. I used to use his p16 version but didn't see any difference.
