View Full Version : WebStore - a web client for the Store plugin
We have started to work on WebStore, a web client for the Store plugin. We'd like the community to actively participate in the development process, so that we could create something great together.
The purpose of this thread is to hear your expectations for the WebStore.

Feature Requests and Bug Reports
Use this thread to discuss about all the features you would like to have
But please add the feature requests also on Jira (once you have a specific idea what you want to have added)
Jira allows you to vote for features that have already been suggested.
Please vote for the features that are important to you on Jira, the standard issue overview sorts the issues by votes, so the features with the most votes are on the top (and the higher a issues is in the overview the more like it is that the issues is resolved)
Just open this link (http://jira.sourcedonates.com/browse/WEBSTORE) and press c on your keyboard (dont forget to log into your account first)
Some notes about the usernames:
As some of you might know, the Atlassian suite is usually used by companies. So you are asked to enter your real name at the registration, if you dont want that just enter your AM nickname.
If you enter something stupid, you account might get deleted
Project Team
At the moment the following people are working on the Web Store:
alongub (http://forums.alliedmods.net/member.php?u=58635)
Groger (http://forums.alliedmods.net/member.php?u=61896)

Release Dates
As usual we are working on this in our freetime and we do not get paid for it, so please be patient. It might take a while to get a working system, and then we need to debug and document the system.
And some people might want to have a admin interface (this takes some time too). We can not give a exact release date (and if we give a release date it might be +- a few months)
Great. Are we going to have to take screenshots of models manually or could there be something that makes this process automatic?

Will this be integrated with the existing store web panel, or a separate site? I ask because a single web portal would be a better idea IMO, having to run two different ones would get annoying (and lead to more people asking for help with problems :P)

I guess I could write a small program that allows you take screenshots of models automatically, but you'll need to adjust the viewpoint for each model.

Right now, the WebStore will be a seperate site. We might integrate them at the future. They'll run on the same database though.

Would you happen to know the licensing the web software will fall under? I'm assuming open source but I'm not wanting to add it to my plugin fork for the store if it's under licensing that restricts it.

I think it is going to be the GNU AGPL (or maybe the GNU GPL)

We are still thinking about the programming language/framework we are going to use for the WebStore
At the moment we are discussing the following options:
Laravel (PHP)
ASP.NET
Django (Python)
The Laravel Framework offers some very interesting features (like bundles), that the CodeIgniter Framework (the current framework of the Store-WebPanel) doesnt have. So If we are going to use PHP, its very likely that we are going to use the Laravel Framework.
A disadvantage of the Laravel framework is, that you should have access to the command line to set it up.
The main reason for ASP.NET or Django is, that we would like to experiment with other programming languages (everyone who is interested in IT can understand this). The main disadvantage of these two languages is, that they are not as wide spread as PHP.
But no matter what programming language we are going to use, there will be a installation guide, that covers the installation of the WebStore. And if we are going to use a different language then php, we are going to provide a list with freehosters where you can install the panel.
I would like to know what you think about these Frameworks/Programming Languages and what features you would like to see in the WebStore

Firstly, would it not make sense to build it as part of the existing web backend, so that there is a unified solution rather than a hodgepodge of different web panels for different tasks. Simpler is nearly always better?
Secondly, anything apart from PHP, Ruby or Perl rules out a large proportion of users, as those are the languages cPanel supports. Most webhosts require you to use cPanel, so it probably isn't practical to use a different language for usability reasons. I did have a nose through Laravel, and it appears it can be installed on cPanel anyway (a variety of solutions here: http://forums.laravel.io/viewtopic.php?id=2436), so I guess any commandline stuff could be done with cronjobs.

I like it but i just feel like its going really far.
maybe 1-2% actually uses loadouts as a proper function and (knows about it) so dont see much reason to change own loadouts on the internet.
Players would more likely join the server rather than going to a website to fix on something that happends inside "these servers"
Purchasing items from webstore sounds like a good idea but again, i dont think many people would use this feature based on its not like they go shopping something that costs money. (that sort of direction + time)
Nice way to show off items! and giving links on ur own forum about new items and stuff that you added to the store that they might potentionally buy, in this way i see the purchasing from website can be usefull aslong you have a very big store and update it a couple times!
Donation integration to purchased items that are put as 1-3 dollars, i mean thats always making it easier rather than having multiple people donate and you have to manually give them the item/credits they are donating for. (now i talk in big numbers)
Always nice to have but its not really a must, but you know you named it webstore and the onliest purpose of that name would be to buy new stuff for ur store and eventually sell items / fix on ur loadout.
Last question, how would someone buy items/sell or check their own loadouts in the webshop? by a long code they get in the server in their own store as login? and if they ever give it away then other people can enter their store? feels like that time when you join a new server and ppl ask you, what is ur code over there and suddenly he gives it out, based on deceiving

Have you noticed that this thread is inactive since more than 2 years ? (and so is this project)
But a WebStore is already implemented in the WebPanel 2.0
