View Full Version : SourceMod Fixes for TF/DoD Update

BAILOPAN
08-14-2009, 05:42
As Team Fortress and Day of Defeat server operators have noticed, Valve released an update tonight that broke SourceMod.

Usually we are able to handle updates very quickly. This one was different. There was no public beta, so we had no way of testing or preparing. To make things worse, Valve actually forked their Orange Box engine, broke compatibility, and didn't release new headers or any information about the changes.

With absolutely no warning, we had to reverse engineer these changes and update our source/build infrastructure for a new engine configuration. It's a testament to how seriously we take update parity that we were able to do this in one night on such short notice. But more on that further down. What you've all been waiting for:

There are now 1.2.2-dev snapshots available (http://sourcemod.net/snapshots.php) that will load on the new TF/DoD engines. We will get the 1.3 branch at parity tomorrow.

For users who have custom gamedata files, please note that we have separated TF/DoD into a new "orangebox_valve" engine property. The Orange Box engine that non-Valve games use is still "orangebox".

We are going to wait a few days to do an official 1.2.2 release. Sometime in the next two weeks there will be a Metamod:Source release as well - it's not needed, but we want to prepare for the worst. After this release we're going to redo our build infrastructure so adding new engine updates is very fast, both to wait for new builds and to support new games across the entire source tree.

This kind of update is extremely stressful on all of us - that includes you! We want to get things right in these situations, rather than damage the product integrity. The community was great in being both supportive and patient while we rushed to get something working. It means a lot both to moral and productivity that we didn't have to put out any fires on the forums or mailing lists.

In particular, it was amazing to see everyone on the SourceMod team work in unison tonight. We were all available for disparate chunks of time across random timezones, and we all have Real Lives to maintain. Despite this everyone pitched in (sometimes chaotically) and everything stitched together. So I would like to give a huge thanks to team members Fyren, pRED, DS, and bl4nk - and #smdevs participants Nephyrin, Drunken_F00l, and voogru.

deleted the Plugins for bonusround, dod_equip and dod_pistols and now its running

Save that as game.dod.txt, put it in addons/sourcemod/gamedata/sdktools.games and restart your server. It should fix most of the crashing.

Great job on this. Although I wasn't part of the team that fixed this (obviously, lol) I know what it's like to fix something that's horribly messed up in a short period of time with a handful of people, and I really respect everything you're doing with SourceMod. :)

On a grammar Nazi note, on the main update page it should be "morale" not "moral," because this matters very much. ;)

Am I the only one having trouble with TF2 linux running the latest version not being able to get a steam connection so players can use unlockables? The connection is fine when I disable sourcemod but once I enabled it, shut down and start up, there's no connection any more.

I have had trouble in the past with the steam connection but it seems really persistent this time and I'm not sure if this latest update is causing it.

newb question: I'm updating the extensions folders now and I see the folder set up is different now. Do I put the auto.2.ep2valve files in the auto.2.ep2 folder where those files currently are or do I change the set up of the folders on the server to match the new snapshot of SM so that the bintools.ext, game.tf2.ext, and sdktools.ext are in a folder called "auto.2.ep2valve"?

The latest snapshot has the updated offsets, just download the newest version from the snapshot page on sourcemod.net

Or edit this file
gamedata/sm-tf2.games.txt

and change the offsets at the bottom to
"ForceRespawn"
{
"windows" "288"
"linux" "289"

save and reboot your server.

sourcemod.vdf is in addons/metamod

metaplugins.ini is not empty

;If your plugin came with a .vdf file, you do not need to use this file.
;
;List one plugin per line. Each line should contain the path to the plugin's binary.
;Any line starting with a ';' character is a comment line, and is ignored.
;
;You do not need to include the _i486.so or .dll part of the file name. Example:
; addons/sourcemod/bin/sourcemod_mm
;You may also put an alias in front of the file, for example:
; sm addons/sourcemod/bin/sourcemod_mm
;Will allow you to use "meta load sm" from the console.

just be patient, the SM devs are working on it in their spare time.

They've worked through a complete night for you, me and everyone else
to get SM 1.2.X working again after Valve messed it up so you should
at least grant them a break and show some more respect.

We're also seeing the same random crashes too both with and without SourceMod running.

Server is Windows 2008 and have ensured it's the latest release of srcds running.

From the event log, the error is:
Faulting application srcds.exe, version 0.0.0.0, time stamp 0x480f7857, faulting module datacache.dll, version 0.0.0.0, time stamp 0x4a85a4e1, exception code 0xc0000005, fault offset 0x000019d5, process id 0x42c, application start time 0x01ca1eaa2f8f9816.

I wonder if the same thing is happening on Linux?

There are still a bunch of wrong offsets for DoD:S in the latest SM, so if you're using fun plugins that use those offsets it could easily crash. I've posted them on the bug tracker (https://bugs.alliedmods.net/show_bug.cgi?id=3948), so we have to wait for them to be implemented. For now you can see the changes here (https://bugs.alliedmods.net/attachment.cgi?id=1668&action=diff), or get the entire file here (http://tsunami.ampaste.net/m254c1196).

You guys might get more help instead of saying that your server is crashing alot instead list you server type and plugin info.

I have a dedicated server at home that I test with and a dedicated server online my clan plays on.

Home
Server - dedicated, game DOD:S
OS - Windows XP Home 32 bit
Metamod - V1.7.1v
Sourcemod - V1.2.2-dev
plugins
default, cannounce.smx, dod_restock_source.smx, sm_dod_medic.smx, HLSW Info.

Online @ Gameservers.com
Server - dedicated, game DOD:S
OS - Linux
Metamod - V1.7.1v
Sourcemod - V1.2.2-dev
plugins
default, cannounce.smx, dod_restock_source.smx, sm_dod_medic.smx, HLSW Info.

On Thursday after the update Gameservers did have a patch that I had to download on thursday and apply that fixed some stuff too, which I did before I found out that SM was broken.
After that both of my servers are running with no crashes, on Friday there was some weird update that was causing my server(s) to reboot at a map change it turned out that my steam.inf file was a PatchVersion=1.0.0.13 I editd the file to be PatchVersion=1.0.0.14 and after that my server stopped crashing. So I would say that the SM V1.2.2-dev is working properly for DOD:S Linux and for Windows XP Home 32 bit at this time.

What we have noticed is the crash is random time wise but it is always when a rifle nade is picked up, we have removed all mods meta and sm and still it crashes, even ran the server and adding one mod at a time then one plugin at a time, we have all the latest snapshots, gamedata etc. But it is the nade everytime, now you can be running the server for hours and nades work but then at anytime crash.

I would just like to say though cracking job guys and trying to sort this out and big thanks from all the guys at The.O.C Gaming for all you efforts, keep up the good work

I "never" modify this file, so I don't think so that is working nice with or without MM, SM.

If you did updated your serevr correctly, the file of steam.inf must to be updated, too, you don't need modify anymore.

I've got no crash on map change for information.

there's wat I guess but you can try to stop your hlstatsx first.

I did stopped hlstatsx for a half day and it seems that won't crash sooner than before, I heared ppl it was running with 5 than more maps

then I enable hlstatsx again, it crashes faster xD

Maybe it's hlstatsx's plugin problem, not sure, just try

OK my DOD:S windows server at home updated just fine our DOD:S Linux server at Gameservers was rebooting after every map and not updating.
I observed the update on my windows server and found the files that were updated and shut the linux server down and manually uploaded them. This fixed the problem I even tested the German rifle grenade thing and its not crashing our server.
I uploaded the zip file to my clan masters webpage and there is a link at the bottom for update15 if you wish to try it on your server, I reccomend backing up those files on your server first.
http://www.panzernader.com/ scroll to the bottom and look for DOD PatchVersion=1.0.0.15
is where you can download it, You have to shut down your server while you upload the files or the update wont take.

Those aren't errors, they're warnings. They are because of a function that is deprecated in v1.3.0 (but will still work the same as in 1.2.x despite the warning). It is trivial to get rid of the warning ( http://forums.alliedmods.net/showthread.php?t=99263 )
