Hello!

Two days ago my server crashed after a restart with the error "segmentation fault".
I decided that it was time to format the OS and install Ubuntu Gnome Shell Remix 11.10 again but now, with a clean install without any "mods" i'm still getting this segmentation fault.

This is ALL of the errors that show up whenever I try to start the server.
I'm using this line in the terminal to start it..
./hlds_run -game cstrike +map de_dust2 -autoupdate -tos -pingboost 2

Spoiler

Tried to remove -pingboost 2 and replaced it with -verify_all parameter.
Not much of a difference.

Spoiler

Any ideas what can cause this?

This is just getting more weird.. I've even tried to launch the server from a flashdrive and it resulted in the same error.
Maybe there's some type of compatibility issue with the latest hlds version or something? I've got no idea..

Segmentation Faults are related to memory and not storage so moving it to a flash drive doesn't change anything FYI.

Interesting. But i can't see how it would run one day and not the other day.
The RAM is working perfectly and the external hard drive i'm using to boot from currently is a new one too.. this is so weird..
And besides i've cd;ed into the steam directory (where i keep hlds directory) and done a chmod +x on that so i can't see why it wouldn't give me permission if that's the case.

i've tried to get hold of the support on STEAM but it's (as usual) a one way street. 1000 emails and no answer...

It's not a permission issue. Steam probably doesn't help you because it doesn't happen to everybody meaning it's likely not an issue with the program itself. It's hard to say. I get it every once in a while on my test server but I also don't run it non-stop like a public server would be.

Well it's a recurring issue for lot's of hosts and server owners according to steam forums where the owner of "BrutalCS" site actually complained about it
so I think it's not a small problem either even though the majority of people don't encounter these issues daily.

I agree but you have to convince Valve that they should care about an ancient game that much.

A thread i "bumped" on Steam forums got a reply.
User named "VampiricPadraig" got work-around on this issue.

Use "linux32" at the beginning of the line eg.
"linux32 ./hlds_run -console -game cstrike"

Now you CAN still get Seg faults with this.

Keep Ctrl+C the server and running the command again (pressing up and enter does the last command) and when you feel that the server has not seg faulted on you after 10 minutes of the server being on, then you are good to go.
So far my server has been running fine without issues for at least 15 minutes, but at least even though it might crash it's one step closer to solving this.
