I might have to load up Ubuntu and run WINE and see how these new drivers fare....

Last time they were HORRIBLE for direct rendering.

I still don't like the concept of running a game through Wine though. I'd rather be able to run the game using a executable of somekind. (note: just because I said executable does not mean I meant a .exe file *dur!*)

Do a shortcut, and have "wine cspwnz00r" in the command line?

Or do you mean an executable that's actually done for Linux?

Yeah, that will be the day..when Valve actually provides a Linux build for their games. This isnt Quake we're talkin about here.

A Linux build would be nice.

Saying "Valve games for Linux!" after reading the job description is a bit of a stretch...

1) Dedicated servers need to be ported
2) The steam platform itself (client OR server) needs to run on Linux
3) Third party games available on Steam might need linux ports

Anyway, the job description definitely doesn't read as "Make Half-Life 2 client work on Linux natively" to me.

I think that is pretty clear to all of us, and we know that we're ahead of ourselves. However, the fact that a huge company like Valve is looking for someone to possibly start finding ways to do these massive portings is a major start, atleast where I stand in.

The fact that the biggest OS of computer era is going to a new direction itself (yes, Windows) means porting things to those too, before XP goes down in history. While there's a huge change in the computer world, when XP support stops, more people will go to Mac OS and Linux. That also means that game companies must be able to adapt to that.

no, not enough to make a difference. and there is absolutely no market for Linux games. it's nice when companies remember to make linux-compatible tools for their games but no one is going to make money from them or the sale of games themselves (see Loki software).

valve is not a huge company... according to wikipedia:
Valve: 104 employees
Take-Two Interactive: 2,000
EA Sports: over 7,000
Ubisoft: 3,500
